THE HISTORY
Of very ancient origin, the town owes its name to the castle that once stood at the top of the hill. In 1028, the castle was seized by armed forces sent by the Archbishop of Milan to suppress the Cathar heresy that had spread in the area. The inhabitants, taken prisoner, were brought to Milan and burned at the stake.
For years, the fortress of Mons Fortisi remained deserted, leading the poet Giovanni Berchet to write: “From Monforte, no one comes; to Monforte, no one goes.”
Even today, according to tradition, the site is said to be haunted by ghosts, moans, and wails—the souls of the Cathars who lived on the hill a thousand years ago…
