The Team

The term “Barolo Boys” was coined in 1990 when an article in The New York Times told the story of a group of young winemakers from Langa. This famous American newspaper described how “The Terrible Barolo Boys” revolutionized the sales and communication system of this prestigious wine, making it known worldwide.

A few years later, with the same innovative spirit, the 11-a-side football team of Monforte d’Alba was born. Talented young players were not lacking, and so, in 1996, this ambitious project began.

The early years already brought great results: in the amateur category, the team consistently finished in first place. In 1998-99, the decision was made to step up to a higher level, moving to the Third Category, with excellent results: third place in the first year and second place in the 1999-2000 season.

In 2000-01 came the turning point, with promotion to the Second Category: here too, every season was played at the highest levels, always among the top positions, with challenging away games throughout Piedmont.

In 2004-2005, a rethinking occurred: returning to amateur levels, for the joy of having fun and returning to a team of players exclusively from the village of Monforte d’Alba.

A wise choice that found significant confirmation in 2007-2008:

  • 1st place in the Championship,
  • Victory in the Territorial Cup,
  • Victory in the Valsecchi Tournament in Bergamo,
  • Victory for the second consecutive year in the Memorial Chiappella in Carrù,
  • 4th place in the Italian National Championships in Cesena,
  • Victory against the Manhattan Football Kickers of New York.

The president of the team, Mirco Cassinelli, comments on the current philosophy of the group: “The most beautiful and important thing is the desire to create something beautiful and fun in Monforte, something that can unite sports, Barolo, and friendship.”
